Why Manchester United Are Desperate to Land This £62.5M Premier League Forward

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to trigger Wolves forward – Matheus Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause at Wolverhampton Wanderers in a bid to fix their attacking woes ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Cunha, who has scored 14 Premier League goals this season for Wolves, has emerged as one of the most consistent forwards outside the traditional top six. His versatility and direct style have attracted interest from multiple clubs, but United now appear to be leading the race.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN and TalkSport that discussions between Cunha’s camp and Manchester United are progressing well, which is also confirmed by Fabrizio Romano. A deal could be completed by early summer, especially if personal terms are agreed swiftly. Cunha is said to be keen on joining the Old Trafford project, particularly under manager, Ruben Amorim.

Amorim’s preference for a 3-4-2-1 system places high value on intelligent, mobile forwards, traits Cunha fits well. Though he’s primarily played as a central striker, the Brazilian has also operated in deeper roles, offering flexibility United currently lack.

With Rasmus Højlund struggling for consistency and United’s attacking output among the lowest in the Premier League, the move is seen as a strategic fix. Club sources believe Cunha’s ability to press, link play, and finish under pressure will complement Amorim’s tactical rebuild.

Cunha, 25, joined Wolves permanently from Atlético Madrid in 2023 and has developed into the team’s standout performer. Despite Wolves’ mid-table finish, Cunha’s value has risen thanks to his goal tally, four assists, and physical presence in the final third.

Arsenal and Newcastle were also monitoring Matheus Cunha, but reports indicate that Manchester United’s project and the prospect of a central role under Amorim swayed the forward’s preference.

United’s recruitment team is also believed to be working on parallel deals, but Cunha is now considered a priority. If completed, this would be the club’s first big value signing under the Amorim regime, and a clear statement of intent.

No official announcement has been made yet, but with the release clause known and the season ending soon, a formal bid is expected before the transfer window opens.
